New to security and trying to learn fast — I’m on my third 10pm–6am warehouse shift and studying for the state guard card exam. What helped you retain the legal/use-of-force material and is a paid one-day class worth it, or should I self-study with practice tests while learning on shift?
class worth it, or should I self-study with practice tests while learning Only pay for a one-day if they run scenario role-plays and state-specific case hits; otherwise hammer practice tests and 20 flashcards during the 2–4am lull on your 10–6, then “teach back” the rules at 5:45. Small caveat: don’t cram use-of-force while walking rounds — do it on breaks and skim post orders on patrol. What state are you in?
My take: I’d lean toward the simplest next step and see if it changes anything this week — if not, you’ve got a clear case to escalate. What would block you from trying that?
On those 10pm–6am lulls, record a 60‑second voice memo where you explain ‘ability, opportunity, jeopardy + preclusion’ using a real incident from your warehouse — , just reading never stuck for me. I’d only pay for a one‑day if they drill report-writing/articulation with graded feedback and break down your state’s cases (Graham factors, etc.); otherwise use Anki and a timed question bank during shift. What state are you in and is there a predictable quiet hour you can block for 20 minutes?
